I’ve read other Updike novels, which are much different than this one. They discuss the gods and goddesses while flirting outrageously with each other. Much of The Centaur inhabits a thoroughly realistic mode, alluding to classical mythology without making the connection explicit. If you find this description of the book interesting, then just read it again instead of reading the book.

The dad is a teacher at his son’s school, and is convinced he is going to die. The writing is both precise and lyrical, which is what makes reading anything by Updike so rewarding.
