Almost everything in the book is common knowledge, and requires little if any referencing. It feels bad to start out this way, but I just did not enjoy this book. However, that is about the positive od I can say about the book. It took me forever to get through this book, because it basically reads like a textbook, which is fine, but not something I think would ever be appealing to kids in the twenty-first century. I must say that Van Loon had a passion for history and tried his best?

Now, having complained a great deal about this book, I must remind myself that this book reflects what must have been current thinking about history at the time. This book is exceptionally Eurocentric, which makes sense for the mankinr in which it was written, but does not excuse the racism and the belief that little of “historic importance” ever came out of the non-western world.
