Following a useful introduction, there follow full page colour plates with accompanying text. I suppose wisely this book is set in the best-selling market — the German army of the late war period.

I was taken with the Osprey series on the subject since first discovering them, but always wanted more. The superb colour artwork plates show combat figures in their various service uniforms; field grey models, summer, tropical, winter, camouflage uniforms, their personal equipment and uniform insignia which is all in unrivalled detail; with accompanying in depth text of when items were first issued and seen in the frontline.

I has definitely given me an understanding I did not have before reading the book — and that is the difference between it and looking at most other titles like it.
There are several figures that come to us – or even pictures of figures, and many of them German because of the nature of them selling so well in the modelling market.

A small footnote — Contrary to claims from some sellers this genadier is still in print! Paperback Stephen Hunter Books. This is now my companion whenever I am trying to work out what a soldier is wearing in a sculpture or artwork.
When I first saw this book I was surprised to see that it looked rather thin, though I was soon impressed by the large format of the pages and the wealth of text inside. Each plate contains two grenadiers illustrated with Mr Andrews usual aplomb. However this book outdoes Osprey in terms of pure visual content grenadifr imagine an Osprey title with back to back plates and you can then see the appeal of this volume. Comparison with Osprey books is inevitable and complimentary.
