The electricity has flickered out. I’m not talking here about the general idea of peak oil, which is the assumed basis for what Greer is “prophesying” here. Listened to five times now! The Art and Practice of Geomancy teaches readers how to divine the answers to life’s everyday questions about health, luck, cuture jobs, and love, as well as finding buried treasure, predicting the weather, and identifying secret enemies.
He doesn’t give us a sweeping vision of the future, just a rough sketch of the terrain.

The opioid crisis, the retreat into gambling to cope with economic distress, the pornification of culture, the rise of magical ecotehcnic, the celebration of sadism, hate, and plagues of suicides are the physical manifestations of a society that is being ravaged by corporate futjre and a failed democracy.
I didn’t agree with his main theme that the only like scenario will be that eventually society will model itself closely to the pre-industrial agrarian societies.

The only faint complaint I have is that Ecotehnic feel that the book could have been a tad longer, with the extra length being added to the chapters on various aspects of our ecotechnic future.
Greer’s analogy breaks down to an extent because modern ecology tends to think climax communities are unattainable because the low probability of obtaining an equilibrium community is hampered, ironically because of climate change. This is the middle book in a sequence of futrue The Long Descent, Ecoyechnic Ecotechnic Future, and The Wealth of Nature which are not officially a series but which bring together in book form the themes that JMG has been developing in his blog over the last few years.
